Since the inception of the Department of Pennsylvania state Essay Contest in 1935, The American Legion has awarded well over 500, 000 in scholarships, while local American Legion Posts, counties, Districts and Sections have also offered suitable awards and prizes for their respective best essay winners.

Saegertown Memorial Post 205 of Pennsylvania received 71 essays for its 2018 contest. All were well worth reading and showed that a lot of heart went in them. Post 205's Youth Education programs support has had a very positive impact on membership. American Legion Post 89 in Pella recognized 5th graders in Pella for participating in the annual Flag Essay Contest. Three winners were chosen: 3rd The essays were read by a committee of teachers at Saegertown High, and the final selection of winners was made by the board of Legion Post 205.

Katelyn Young, the daughter of Michael and Sharon The winner of the Pennsylvania Oratorical contest will move onto the National American Legion Oratorical program and will be eligible to win 18, 000 for first place, 16, 000 for second place and 14, 000 for third place.

For competition prior to the department finals, the contest rules and regulations are not mandatory; they are offered as guidelines. Grade levels are divided into six classes. One award in each of the six classes will be presented in each division.
